Pop Go the Movie Popcorn Prices

iStock_000005596272MediumWhy is popcorn so expensive at movie theaters? The Marketplace radio program of American Public Media turned last August to Associate Professor Ricard Gil, an expert on organizational economics, for some help in answering this vexing question.

For one thing, Gil pointed out, selling overpriced popcorn is a way for theaters to make money off those customers who are willing to spend freely for the whole movie-going experience, such as people on dates. (These people who buy their pricey popcorn, candy, and sodas in the theater lobby compensate for the frugal folks among us who sneak in with homemade popcorn and Mike and Ikes purchased at the local convenience store.)
